To Blog or Not to Blog… That should NOT be the Question

Published by Andy under Blogging

For those of you not familiar with the term blog… just go to “Google Blog Search” http://blogsearch.google.com/ and search for your favorite food, sports team, car, etc.  You will realize that everybody is doing it, well why aren’t you?

Remember when you were a kid and you wrote in your journal every night about what happened that day at school?  Well this is the same concept, except this time you get to talk about your own expertise.  You get to express your opinions, and if you are lucky other people will see them and comment back.  For those of us who are very opinionated (myself included), blogging is an amazing way to help blow off some steam, and express my views.

A blog will help you in your field, it will help you verbalize your thoughts and reach out to those that share and even refute your ideas.  Who doesn’t like a good argument based around  topic you believe you are an expert in?  Want to know the real reason why you need to blog?  You will help increase your organic search results with a regularly updated blog.  Google’s algorithms love blogs, that is because they love content that is updated regularly.

Don’t know where to start… we can help get your blog up and going.  We can give you ideas to help market your blog, and help you make money off of your blog.  Many blogs make thousands of dollars of month… you could be doing that too.  www.DomainToDesign.com

Blog isn’t just an online trend… it could be the key to your company’s online success.

Does your Website Have a Positive ROI?

Published by Andy under Business Strategy

Does your website have a positive Return on Investment? If not, you probably need to re-evaluate the ways you are driving traffic to your website. A great thing about web businesses are the low cost of operation. If you aren’t MAKING money, you probably aren’t LOSING too much. When calculating your websites ROI, there are probably minimal monthly fees. A few monthly fees that calculate into your website’s ROI are…

1)Hosting Fees

2)Advertising Fees

3)Maintnance Fees (If you do not do it yourself)

Compare that with montly fees of a brick and mortar company, and you will be glad you are sticking to the web. With that being said, many web entrepreneurs have found it difficult to turn that corner into profitability.

In a nutshell if you want to turn that corner and start to MAKE money, the key is to get visitors. A website without visitors is like selling hot-dogs on a street corner in the middle of a desert. There is no potential for earnings if people don’t see your products. So, when you start to figure out ways to increase your websites ROI, think of ways you are currently driving traffic to your site. You need to have advertising ideas, Organic click-throughs will usually not be enough.

In the end, If you offer a quality product the sales will start to come in over time. Don’t stress out if it takes several months to see traffic and sales increase. Web business follows the snowball effect. You will usually see traffic and sales rapidly increase over time, sometimes to the point you are struggling to fill orders. Like with any business, keep your ROI in mind and keep pushing forward.

To Degree or Dis-the-Degree…That is the Question!

Published by Mike under Education

Many people contemplate whether it’s a good idea to go back to school for another degree, MBA, M.S. or what have you. There is much debate whether furthering your education will make you more successful and in return make you more money. There are a million different opinions. Some say leaders and people who are successful are born with it. Some say it’s a learned skill. There is no right or wrong answer. You have to determine for yourself if going back to school is right for you.

I’ll give you a very personal example. I earned my B.A. in Communications in 1999 after changing my degree 3-4 times from dietetics to fitness to business and finally communications (because it’s broad). I went off into the workforce hoping to land a marketing job. I had NO idea what I actually wanted to do with myself. I didn’t know what marketing was…I was just out of school with no experience. I just knew it sounded “cool”! So, I took a few jobs doing some general marketing….nothing special and wasn’t very challenging. I always wanted to be challenged. I love(d) technology. My brain was always churning….What do I want to do? What should I do? I looked into a number of different options. The option that I finally decided upon was returning to school to get my graduate degree in Information Systems.

So, I applied to the DePaul CTI (School of Computer Science, Telecommunications & Informaion Systems). I was accepted and I started my technical journey and also started to acquire my new skill set of information systems, programming and networks. I still worked full-time in a general marketing position at a financial exchange in Chicago while attending graduate school. So, without knowing it, I was doing both general marketing and learning about technology and building a unique skill set that was not all that common. While attending graduate school, I thought that I might want to come out and be a programmer or maybe a network security specialist. I wasn’t really sure…but I knew that I would figure it out. After about a year into my graduate studies, it all started to click. I didn’t hate marketing…I just got sick of doing the same old general marketing tasks I had been doing for a few years day in and day out. Did I REALLY want to be a programmer when I finished graduate school? I realized…probably not! Who wants to sit at a computer all day and look at code? Not me! So, I thought….why can’t I combine my marketing experience with my new technology skill set? When I interviewed, hiring managers and HR employees looked at me funny. They would say….how unique….seems like a great combination of skills….but different. I labeled it as a hybrid marketing concentration back then. Little did I know that what I was getting experience in is what we call Internet Marketing today. 5-7 years ago, Internet or web marketing was very new and many people knew nothing about it. Today, it’s essential to operating almost any business venture.

So, you say….what does this have to do with going back to school? I spend a nice chunk of cash on this degree…a little over $80,000 out of my own pocket. Did I get a huge raise when I was finished? No, I didn’t. Did I win any awards? No, I received no awards. Did I get a new job title? No new job title. Was it worth it? Yes, it was worth every single penny. If I hadn’t went back to school, I’d probably still be trying to figure out what it is I want to do with my life. The degree has since paid off exponentially. Everything falls into place in due time.

Getting back to the point…you really have to look at the entire package of what going back to school can do for you. Don’t just look at the money. Don’t assume you will be extremely successful just because you go back to law school or get your MBA. The competition is fierce for graduate degrees and employers can now pick out of a hat. You have to look deeper than the initial reasons for wanting to go back. Think of it as a long term goal and not something to get you where you need to go instantly. Most of all, if you do go back to school, put in the time it deserves so you can take out of it all you can. Make it worth the investment in money…but also your investment in time.

Need Website Help “Quick Tip”…Keep and Open Mind!

Published by Andy under Quick Tips

So you still need some more website help? Well here is my quick thought of the day…

Please Please Please, when seeking website marketing help… keep an open mind to unique ideas.

There is a reason why web marketing firms can make good money, that is because they can do things on the web that you may not know how to do, or even understand. An executive needs to take risks, and be open minded, when trying to take his/her company to a new level. The same theories apply when speaking about marketing of websites. In order to get to the next level, please be open minded and open to taking some risks. Doing what everybody else is doing will only get you to their level. If you have found a good web marketing firm, they want to place you well ABOVE your competition.  That is how you will start to make money on the web.

If your web marketing firm can’t come up with unique ideas, keep shopping around for a different company. If you find one that makes you scrath your head and think “will that really work”???…. Keep an open mind and give them a shot.

Create A Successful Blog

Published by Mike under Blogging

With all of the buzz about starting a blog, it leaves people wondering, “How can I create a successful blog?” Many people and businesses start blogs with the intention to spread their words of wisdom and provide a valuable place that users can go to find information about a particular subject, product or service. This is great….but what happens when all of that initial motivation is gone? What happens when you no longer write in your blog? What happens when you give up too soon? Your blog will fail!

There are certain things you can do to basically assure your blog will become successful. This is no guarantee because blogging is a huge and competitive market but these tips will help you get your blog where you want it to be and in the hands of the readers you are searching for.

1.) Create a UNIQUE blog. I understand that it’s often hard to come up with a new topic or a new idea for a blog. Chances are someone has already beat you to it. So, what do you do in this instance? Make it better than what’s already out there. Provide your unique opinion on the topic. Be controversial. Think out of the box. Provide your users with something of value.

2.) Commit to writing in your blog regularly. You don’t have to post 10 different blog topics a day. You don’t have to post 10 per week. You just have to create a routine that you can handle and stick to it. The number one reason blogs fail is the lack of updated content. Keep it fresh. If you don’t want to write about what your blog is about, create a misc. category and post about what you ate last night or write about your last vacation. Just make sure you don’t neglect the blog and let it sink to the bottom of the blogosphere. Starting out, I’d say if you can write a quality blog post every other day, that’s a good start. When you create your routine, never do less or your readers will not rely on you for updated content. If you say you will post one blog post per day….stick to it. Don’t skip a day. You can always increase your blog posting frequency but never decrease it. Find a routine you can handle initially and start writing

You will often get writer’s block and find it hard to write about something unique or interesting. On days that you are full of ideas, write as many different blog posts as you can and save them for days that you have nothing to say.

Use blog plug-ins that are available. I am a huge fan of Wordpress. It’s a free blog platform with tons of functionality. You can use their standard template if you want to go basic or you can add on plug-in modules that will increase your blog’s functionality. Wordpress plug-ins can range from monetizing your blog to stopping spam and there are modules to help you get better search engine optimization and web analytics. As of this post, I beleive there are around 1,500 plug-ins on the Wordpress website.

Monetize your blog. If you generate enough blog traffic, there is no reason you should not try to monetize your blog. There are tons of ways to monetize your blog but the most common are Google Adsense, Commission Junction and also Text Link Ads. There are thousands of other ways but the three mentioned above are a great place to start. From there you can decide the best way to monetize your blog and your blog traffic.

Get RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Subscribers. RSS feeds are a great way to spread your blog content and gain readership to your blog. You can allow people to pull your RSS feed and post it on their website to spread your content, the can add your RSS to a reader so they are updated regularly on your content or people can sign up via email to have your blog articles emailed to them directly. FeedBurner (acquired by Google) is a great place to manage all of your RSS subscriptions. Readership is essential for blog survival so this will be an area you will want to focus on.

Get involved in the blogging community. Go out and talk with other like-minded individuals who are interested in the same topics as you. Join forums and discussion boards to discuss new ideas and topics and ways to help your blog. Join other blogs and leave back valuable comments to their posts. Make sure you leave a link back to your blog when you are posting on forums and other blogs. You can do this in your signature and it’s a great way to become a leader in your industry and generate more traffic to your blog.

Most importantly….just keep writing. It will take time and some effort before you see the traffic start to pour in but keep up the hard work. Stick to your schedule. Come up with new ideas. In the long run, your blog will become successful, you can make some extra money (or possibly full-time money) and you can enjoy writing about something that interests you while helping other people learn.
